Reeaz Khan, a 21 year old illegal immigrant from Guyana, is accused of the attack. He was arrested multiple times last year but authorities ignored the detainer request from ICE.
“It was a deadly choice to release a man on an active ICE detainer back onto the streets after his first arrest included assault and weapon charges, and he now faces new charges, including murder,” – ICE officer Thomas Decker
Fuertes granddaughter, Daria Ortiz, was invited by President Trump to speak at the White House. During an emotional speech she spoke of her grandmother coming to the United States from the Dominican Republic as a legal immigrant.
“She is a shining example of when people come legally to this country, work hard and do the right thing, and are law-abiding citizens.
Our families hope is that her death was not in vain and that preventative measures are put into place to ensure that nothing like this ever happens to anyone again. The tragedy in all of this is that this could have been avoided had there been no sanctuary law. The tragedy is my grandmother is not ever going to be here again.
The man that is responsible for this should never have had the opportunity to do this, had his multiple offences not been ignored. The system not only failed our family, but they failed our city.”
