In an effort to help first responders in New Jersey and surrounding areas a group of volunteer doctors are donating their time and expertise to help in the fight against the coronavirus.
With 911 calls on the rise as more and more first responders are forced to call out sick due to the coronavirus, MD1 a nonprofit organization consisting of a group of emergency physicians helps treat patients alongside ambulance teams
“It’s crazy out there right now. We’re getting one 911 call after the next.”
“We literally go into any 911 system, fire department or police department that can’t keep up — at their request — and we help them out. We’re going on EMS calls right now because in the last couple of days, the volume had been so high.”
– Dr Mark Merlin CEO and founder of MD1
Right now New York Fire Department is receiving the same amount of calls each day that they received during the 9/11 terrorist attack and need all they help they can get.
MD1 consist of volunteer emergency, pediatric emergency and critical care medicine physicians who all have vehicles equipped to perform functions similar to ER operating rooms
“These people — they’re my heroes. They do this at night, on the weekends. It’s the way they were brought up. It’s what they believe from the time they were young.”
“This is just something that you do at a time of crisis. You step up to the plate and you don’t go home, you sleep in the garage or some first aid squad building until the crisis resolves.”
– Dr Mark Merlin
Prior to the coronavirus, MD1 doctors were handling about 20 calls a day. During the pandemic they have been responding to 100-200 calls a day.
“One of my docs was out last night until 3:00, 4:00 in the morning when the 911 system started to die down a little bit, which never used to be the case. Now there could be three, four, five, six, seven calls waiting at any one time — of critical patients.”
– Dr Mark Merlin
It’s amazing to see these doctors being willing to donate their time and put themselves in harms way to help out their community
