As protest and riots continue in Seattle over the death of George Floyd, the Seattle Mayor and Police Chief have announced the banning of tear gas for 30 days as a means to disperse demonstrators.

Seattle authorities have suspended the use of tear gas in the city until they can review the policies and make recommended changes to it as well as provide training to officers on the use of it.

“After hearing concerns about the use of CS gas for crowd control purposes earlier this week … we decided we were going to suspend its use for 30 days,”
– Police Chief Carmen Best

While tear gas is banned police can still use pepper spray, flash bang grenades and other techniques to help with crowd control.

“It’s really important we’re looking at every aspect of force and how we’re utilizing it. We’ll review everything we’re utilizing.”
– Police Chief Carmen Bes

The review is being conducted by various groups including public health officials, civilian police accountability groups, outside experts and federal oversight officials.

“This review should better emphasize de-escalation tactics and incorporate recommendations from our accountability partners on the use of any crowd control techniques, including the use of tear gas and flash-bangs,”
– Mayor Jenny Durkan

The decision to review the use of tear gas as well as other methods to control crowds is being reviewed after violent protest that occurred last weekend.
