A Commons Ford Metropolitan Park Ranger asked a group gathered on a dock at Lake Austin to disperse because they were not following social distancing guidelines of standing 6 feet apart. The group was also drinking and smoking in the park which is illegal.
A man then ran up behind the ranger and pushed him into the lake. The individual fell into the lake as well, but he got out quickly and fled the scene.
Brandon Hicks was identified as the individual who pushed the ranger into the lake. He was arrested and charged with attempted assault on a public servant which is a felony. His bail was set at $7,500.
Justin Berry was the police officer who responded to the scene and said the other individuals on the dock were quick to assist him in identifying who had pushed the park ranger into the lake.
“The patrons of the park actually came to the aid of the park ranger. Several people came up to the ranger and apologized for the guy’s behavior. That’s the Austin we know, and that’s the Austin we love.”
– Officer Justin Berry
