CITY OF NEWBURGH, NY – Newburgh police unions on Friday alleged City Councilman-at-Large Omari Shakur made threats and used abusive and vulgar language toward two police officers during an incident on Tuesday, including a threat to run over a police officer.

Shukur was pulled over for a traffic infraction, which was captured on body cam video. Police Benevolent Association President Ricardo Rivera said the incident occurred after a city police detective was driving and saw a vehicle parked in the roadway in the opposite lane of traffic with Shakur at the wheel.

The Police Superior Officers Association, a union for high-ranking Newburgh officers, said in a statement that Shakur told a detective, “I’m your (expletive) boss,” and threatened to run over another uniformed officer, telling him to “pull your gun out (expletive) ’cause I’m getting ready to go at you.”

Omari Shakur later released this statement: “I want to apologize to the residents of our city for the way I responded in a recent police encounter, The reaction displayed is not who I am and I fell short of the love that I feel amongst my constituents in Newburgh and of the leadership I want to represent.”

Shakur’s 23-year-old son, Antonio “Tony” Bryant, was shot and killed by city police during an incident in 2006 that has created tension between Shakur and police.
