Officer Craig Johnson and Officer Aurash Zarkeshan conducted a traffic stop on Monday morning in Tulsa. When the officers got the suspect, David Ware, out of the vehicle he produced a handgun and shot both officers in the head.
Ware was apprehended by police later on and is in custody.
Both officers were transported to a nearby hospital and underwent surgery.
Unfortunately Officer Craig Johnson did not survive the injuries and he passed away today. Officer Johnson has been with the Tulsa Police Department since 2005 and was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2015.
Prior to his passing Chief Wendell Franklin awarded Johnson the Tulsa Police Department Purple Heart for his injuries he incurred during the line of duty on June 29, 2020
I want to thank the Johnson family for giving their son to the Tulsa Police Department and citizens of Tulsa. His sacrifice will be forever remembered. We’ve lost an officer today, but his loss renews our spirit.
– Chief Franklin
Officer Johnson was married and had two young boys. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Officer Johnson.
