As hundreds of people gathered in downtown Detroit protesting the death of George Floyd an individual in a Dodge Durango fired shots into the crowd.
The incident occurred around 11:30 pm on Friday near the Greektown Entertainment District. The teenager who was shot was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Earlier in the evening as police formed lines confronting the protesters an officer was injured when he was hit with a brick by someone in the crowd.
Police made dozens of arrest and many of the individuals were not residents of Detroit.
“I will not stand by and let a small minority, criminals, come in here, attack our officers and make our community unsafe. Just know, we are not going to tolerate it,”
-Detroit Police Chief James Craig said.
The protest had begun early in the day and started out peaceful, but as the day went on the crowd got more aggressive. The number of arrest and injuries during the protest have not been released.
