Around 3 am police responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunshots in CHAZ. By the time the police arrived the victims of the shooting had already left the scene.
One victim was transported to the hospital via a personal vehicle and the other victim was taken to a fire station and then transported to the hospital via an ambulance.
One victim was a 14 year old black male who is currently in ICU in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center. The second victim was a black male who was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
“It’s very unfortunate that we have another murder in this area identified as the CHOP, Two African-American men… dead at a place where they claim to be working for Black Lives Matter but they’re gone. They’re dead now. And we’ve had multiple other incidents — assaults, rapes, robbery, shootings — so this is something that’s going to need to change.”
– Police Chief Carmen Best
By the time police began investigating the shooting the crime scene had been tampered with and individuals within CHAZ refused to cooperate to help police with their investigation.
The city has made attempts to break down CHAZ but protesters blocked their efforts on Friday. As the Seattle Department of Transportation tried to remove the barricades around CHAZ, protesters laid down on the grounds putting a halt to the operation.
CHAZ organizers plan to move into the abandoned police precinct and use it as a bargaining tool to have their demands meant.
A lawsuit has been filed against the city of Seattle by multiple business owners, residents, and property owners within the CHAZ claiming the city has done nothing to halt the situation and has violated their rights to their property.
Protesters have taken over the area for several weeks now.
