Around 9 pm on Saturday night Louisville police responded to a report of shots fired in Jefferson Square Park where protesters had gathered. When police arrived they found the victim unresponsive and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Steven Nelson Lopez was arrested shortly after the shooting occurred. Lopex had sustained a minor gunshot wound during the incident when other protesters fired shots to protect themselves.
Multiple witnesses identified Lopez as the shooter and the incident was caught on surveillance video.
Lopez had been arrested on two previous occasions for rioting related charges. On June 17 he was arrested for starting a riot, disorderly conduct, drug possession and harassment. Two days later he was arrested again for unlawful assembly and disorderly conduct.
Earlier in the day protesters had asked Lopez to leave the park but he refused.
