Palm Springs is not only mandating residents wear masks when they leave their home, but is imposing fines up to $25,000 for residents who violate the city’s local emergency order
As cities and states continue to issue strict orders to combat the coronavirus pandemic, Palm Springs has enacted very steep penalties for those who do not comply.
All residents and visitors to Palm Springs are required to wear a face masks anytime they leave their home. Individuals who violate the order can face an initial fine of up to $5000 and second and third offenses could see fines of up to $25,000.
David Ready the City Manager for Palm Springs said that police officers could use discretion when issuing the fines. Fines for not practicing social distancing could be as little as $50. However people who continue to violate the city’s orders after repeated warnings could see fines anywhere from $5,000 to $25,000
“We’re almost at the end of our second 14-day incubation period, and we’re continuing to have community spread. If everyone was following the rules, those numbers would be lower, and we’d get through this faster.”

The harsher penalties being imposed by the city of Palm Springs is not being meant well by residents. Citizens have a right to leave their homes and choose not to wear a mask.
