As the spread of the Coronavirus continues to spread across the globe the United States is preparing for a pandemic and putting hospitals on alert to prepare for it in their community.
The coronavirus across the world has infected close to 76,800 people and has killed 2250 people. While the majority of the cases are still coming from China there has been a noticeable increase in other countries as well.
The World Health Organization is urging countries to put plans in place to plan for a pandemic which at this time they feel is a likely possibility.
The CDC is working closely with state and local health departments to help them be prepared should the virus come into their community
“We’re not seeing community spread here in the United States, yet, but it’s very possible, even likely, that it may eventually happen. Our goal continues to be slowing the introduction of the virus into the U.S. This buys us more time to prepare communities for more cases and possibly sustained spread.”
– Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases
The CDC is working with hospitals, pharmacies, medical suppliers and manufacturers to ensure that they have the supplies they need and can gain access to more supplies in the case of a pandemic.
“This is the time to open up your pandemic plans and see that things are in order. For instance, health-care providers need to plan for a surge at a hospital, the ability to provide personal protective equipment for your workforce, the administrative controls and so forth that you might put place in a health care setting.”
– Dr. Anne Schuchat, CDC Official
