Across the United States many governors have ordered the shutdown of nonessential business in an effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Unfortunately several states have included gun related businesses as nonessential.
The White House however named gun related businesses as essential on Saturday and the Department of Homeland Security updated their guidelines to reflect these changes.
“Workers supporting the operation of firearm or ammunition product manufacturers, retailers, importers, distributors, and shooting ranges are deemed essential.”
“Those workers are listed under the designation for law enforcement, public safety, and other first responders. That designation also includes public, private, and voluntary personnel in emergency management, law enforcement, fire and rescue services, emergency medical services, and private security, to include public and private hazardous material responders, air medical service providers, corrections, and search and rescue personnel,”
– Department of Homeland Security
The guidelines however from the White House and DHS are considered recommendations and are nonbinding. Essentially states still have the authority to choose whether or not to deem gun related businesses as essential.
The sale of guns and ammunition has sky rocketed across the United States in response to states ordering the closure of gun related businesses.
The National Shooting Sports Foundation has said that gun businesses are essential and should be able to remain open.
“We have seen over the past week hundreds of thousands, even millions of Americans choosing to exercise their right to keep and bear arms to ensure their safety and the safety of loved ones during these uncertain times. Americans must not be denied the ability to exercise that right to lawfully purchase and acquire firearms during times of emergency.”
