Just days after the Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle announced his support for defunding the police department, Chicago experiences yet an other weekend of extensive violence.
Sixty people were shot in Chicago as of Sunday morning. Nine of them were killed and four of those killed were minors. Yet as local leaders struggle to get a handle on the crime and violence in Chicago they are pushing for the police department to be defunded.
Just before 6:30 pm on Saturday night a man was driving his son, when a car pulled up to him and opened fire. The son was hit in the back and later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Just a few hours later, two teenage boys were sitting on a porch when they were fired at. Both boys were taken to a hospital and are expected to survive. However the 13 year old girl inside the home was hit in the neck and later pronounced dead at the hospital.
In South Chicago just an hour earlier two teenage boys were shot and killed.
As violence continues throughout Chicago killing many youth, the city has announced it will be removing police officers from schools as part of the movement to defund the police deparment.
With so many young lives being lost to reckless violence it makes you wonder how the city plans to tackle the problem with less police officers on the streets to combat crime.
