Just six days after protesters took over a six block area of downtown Seattle including the closing of a police station, they charged City Hall demanding Mayor Durkan resign if she does not defund the police department.
The protesters continued to camp out in an area they have deemed as a cop free zone as the peacefully protested the death of George Floyd and demand the Mayor resign.
The East Precinct has been abandoned for several days and since the area has reduced the presence of law enforcement the protest have remained peaceful.
Last week Mayor Durkan had banned the use of tear gas until an investigation could be conducted about its use.
The Mayor’s office released a statement in response to the protesters.
“As the person who originally investigated the Seattle Police Department for the unconstitutional use of force, Mayor Durkan believes that SPD can lead the nation on continued reforms and accountability, but knows this week has eroded trust at a time when trust is most crucial,”
