On Wednesday, San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott, announced that the police will stop releasing mugshots of people who have been arrested in an effort to stop racial stereotyping.
The police typically release mugshots of people who are arrested regardless of whether or not the person is prosecuted. San Francisco Police will now only release mugshots of people who pose a threat to the public.
However typically if someone has been arrested one might conclude that they are a potential threat to the public.
Los Angeles and New York also do not release mugshots unless they believe that by doing so it will help witnesses to crimes come forward or help law enforcement find a suspect.
According to ‘experts’ releasing mugshots is considered to be racist or at least racially biased.
