In response to protesters demanding that the Portland Police Department be defunded, the Portland City Council passed a budget that would cut the police department’s funds by $15 million.
Under the new budget the Gun Violence Reduction Team, SERT Team and 107 full time positions would be completely eliminated. The Portland Schools’ Resource Officer Program is also being ended starting in the new school year.
The new budget gives $4.8 million to the Portland Street Response which sends EMS and a social worker to respond to mental health issues and homelessness.
Portland is just one of many cities to defund their police departments. Other cities such as Los Angeles and New York City have announced budget cuts to their police departments as well.
