A New Jersey Army National Guardsman who has been in the hospital since March 21 passed away over the weekend from the coronavirus.

Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic over 600 military members have contracted the coronavirus. This past weekend they lost a service member to the deadly virus.

“Today is a sad day for the Department of Defense as we have lost our first American service member – active, reserve or Guard – to Coronavirus. This is a stinging loss for our military community, and our condolences go out to his family, friends, civilian co-workers and the entire National Guard community. The news of this loss strengthens our resolve to work ever more closely with our interagency partners to stop the spread of COVID-19.”
– Secretary of Defense Mark Esper

The Pentagon has not disclosed the age of the service member who died or whether or not he had any preexisting conditions.

Since January the military has been putting different protocols in place to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus among military personnel. They have been implementing social distancing, canceling certain work and training activities and providing medical support when needed.
