PINETOP-LAKESIDE, ARIZ. – White Mountain Apache Police Department Officer David Kellywood was killed Monday during a violent physical altercation where the officer and suspect were both shot.

The Navajo County Sheriff’s Office said the White Mountain Apache Police Department received a report of gunfire near the Hon-Dah Resort Casino shortly before 1 a.m. The first officer on the scene found the man described in that call.

“The subject immediately engaged in a violent, physical altercation with the officer, during which, the officer was shot,” A NCSO news release read. “A second responding officer arrived shortly after, and fearing for his life and the public’s safety, shot the suspect.”

The suspect and the officer were taken to a local hospital where both died.

Jerold Altaha, District II Councilmember, identified the officer as David Kellywood.  The sheriff’s office said the FBI was leading the investigation into the shooting.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the officer’s family, department, and community. Rest easy Sir.
