CHEHALIS, WA – The Washington State Patrol confirmed a 28-year-old Trooper was killed on Tuesday after being hit by a car during a pursuit in Chehalis.
Authorities said Tuesday evening Trooper Justin Schaffer was attempting to deploy spike strips during a pursuit when the suspect struck him with a car. Trooper Schaffer was transported to a hospital where he later died.
The collision occurred on southbound I-5 near Chamber Way. The pursuit continued for several miles until the suspect crashed into a light pole. The suspect later surrendered to police and was arrested.
39-year-old William D. Thompson was being chased for a robbery that occurred earlier in the week. Investigators say Thompson now faces charges of vehicular homicide.
No other Troopers were injured during the pursuit.
Trooper Justin Schaffer was a seven year officer and was most recently assigned as a K9 officer. Schaffer is survived by his wife, mother, father, brother and K9 partner. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Trooper Schaffer’s family, department, and community.
