On Sunday night in Phoenix police officers responded to a domestic dispute that turned deadly, killing a police commander and injuring two other officers.

Police in Phoenix responded to a domestic dispute around 7 pm on Sunday night. Apparently two roommates were getting into an argument. When police arrived at the scene one of the roommates was cooperating and talking with police.

However the roommate’s behavior became erratic and the suspect refused to leave.

Additional police were called to the scene and officers Dowhan, Hubert and Commander Carnicle went up the stairs to the residence. At which point the suspect who was in the home fired shots at the officers, hitting all three of them.

Commander Carnicle was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Officer Dowhan is out of surgery and expected to fully recover. Officer Hubert was shot in the lower extremities and is expected to fully recover as well.

Additional police remained at the scene in an effort to apprehend the suspect. However the suspect exited the home and was armed. Police shot the suspect who was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police Commander Carnicle served 31 years with the police department and was just months away from retiring. Throughout his career he held various positions with the department including the special assignments unit and the K9 unit.

“Tonight we lost a true hero. To be able to stand here today and say that one of my good friends is lost is troubling.”
– Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Commander Carnicle
