On Sunday New York City Mayor De Blasio pledged to cut New York Police Department funding and allocate more funds to social service programs and youth.

Cities across the United States are threatening to defund the police as a result of the death of George Floyd and now the NYPD faces potential budget cuts.

Mayor De Blasio said that he wants to allocate more funds to focus on the youth in the city.

“We’re committed to seeing a shift of funding to youth services, to social services, that will happen literally in the course of the next three weeks, but I’m not going to go into detail because it is subject to negotiation and we want to figure out what makes sense,”
– Mayor De Blasio

De Blasio has stated that the budget cuts will be done in a way that does not impact the safety of the city. However how he plans to do that remains to be seen.

The NYPD has worked tirelessly over the past several months trying to keep order throughout the coronavirus pandemic and the George Floyd Riots, and now their hard work is being appreciated by slashing their funding.
