Several members of the Minneapolis City Council are making plans to dismantle the Minneapolis Police and put in a different form of public safety. The announcement comes after days of protest over the death of George Floyd.
“Yes. We are going to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department and replace it with a transformative new model of public safety,”
– Lisa Bender Minneapolis City Council President
Lisa Bender has not provided details on what dismantling the police department would look like.
An organization called Reclaim the Block that was formed in 2018 has been petitioning for funds to the police department to be cut and replace the police with community health and safety programs. The organization does not have specific suggestions on what exact programs should be put in place.
However what will happen to social order if you reduce the police presence? While health and safety programs can be beneficial to the community as a whole, there still needs to be an enforcement of laws and social order or there runs the risk of chaos breaking out throughout the city. It sounds like a breeding ground for criminal activity to escalate.
