Attorney General Barr ordered U.S. Attorneys to protect the constitutional rights of American citizens by considering legal action against any governor whose orders to slow the spread of the coronavirus infringe on the rights of U.S. citizens

Attorney General Barr issued a two page memo on Monday for U.S. Attorneys to take action against any governor that imposes measures to slow the spread of the coronavirus that violate religious, free speech or economic rights of Americans

“If a state or local ordinance crosses the line from an appropriate exercise of authority to stop the spread of COVID-19 into an overbearing infringement of constitutional and statutory protections, the Department of Justice may have an obligation to address that overreach in federal court,”
– Attorney General Barr

Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Eric Dreiband and U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan Matthew Schneider have been directed by Barr to look into state and local policies that violate constitutional rights

“Many policies that would be unthinkable in regular times have become commonplace in recent weeks, and we do not want to unduly interfere with the important efforts of state and local officials to protect the public. But the Constitution is not suspended in times of crisis,”
– Attorney General Barr

Barr has made his views known on coronavirus restrictions that infringe on citizens constitutional rights, reminding state leaders that constitutional rights don’t go out the window because of a pandemic.
