Hours after a suspect hit a man with his car, he was found by police beaten and tied to a pole

Thomas Bechtold got into a heated argument with James Leslie on Friday afternoon. Bechtold then took his car and attempted to kill Leslie by driving his car into him.

Officers from the sheriff’s department along with California highway patrol responded to the incident in Valley Springs. When they arrived on the scene they were informed that Bechtold had used his car to hit Leslie knocking him unconscious

Police immediately began an investigation to locate Bechtold. About three hours into the investigation police were informed that he had been dropped off near the location of where he hit Leslie.

Police found Bechtold beaten and tied to a telephone pole near the scene of the initial encounter. It appears that a citizen made an attempt at vigilante justice.

Bechtold was arrested by police and charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, battery with serious injury and a felony hit and run. He is currently being held at Calaveras County Jail and his bail is set at almost $2.2 million

Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
