Fresno, CA – A Fresno County Sheriff’s deputy was shot Wednesday in central Fresno. At 4:30 PM a deputy was arriving in the area of a domestic violence call at North Sixth Street and East Mayfair Drive South when he saw a male walking in the area and attempted to stop him.

The man, 25-year-old Ricardo Venegas, immediately took a fighting stance and attacked the deputy.

“During this fight, Venegas reached several times for the deputy’s holstered handgun,” Sheriff’s Department spokesman Tony Botti said. “During the struggle, a round was discharged from the deputy’s handgun while inside the holster.”

An off-duty deputy was in the area and helped detain the suspect. The suspect was determined to be a parolee at large with a warrant for his arrest. Investigators did not know yet if the domestic violence call was related to the suspect. Bail for Venegas is $636,000.

The deputy sustained a wound to his leg and was later treated and released from a local hospital.
