Back in 2014 the city of Detroit went bankrupt and as a result the police force suffered a 20 percent cut. The result has been an increase in homicides, increase in nonfatal shootings, and increase in kids being killed.
Detroit has seen a decrease in funding over the past six years and as a result the police force has been decreased by 20 percent. Looking at the numbers from 2019 to 2020 the city has seen a 25 percent increase in homicides and a 30 percent increase in nonfatal shootings.
The numbers in Detroit insinuate that by defunding the police there has been a drastic increase in the overall crime in the city. Police departments are essential in helping combat crime and any city that defunds their police department runs the risk of seeing crimes increase and more lives being lost.
