According to officials connected with the state prison system, Harvey Weinstein has tested positive for the coronavirus and is currently in isolation. He is one of two prisoners at the facility to test positive. Weinstein recently turned 68 last week.
Due to privacy rules officials with the New York Department of Corrections will not comment on Weinstein’s health
Weinstein is currently serving a 23 year sentence for rape and sexual assault.
It is believed that Weinstein had the virus when he was transferred from Rikers Island to the Wende Correctional Facility this past Wednesday.
Weinstein was accepted at the facility after his sentencing hearing last week. During his trial prior to coming into the Wende Correctional Facility he was alternating between being at Rikers and being treated at a local hospital for high blood pressure and chest pains.
The New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association Union has urged the state to immediately suspend all nonessential transfers between correctional facilities. The state has suspended all visits to inmates at this time.
Currently 3 correctional officers have tested positive for the coronavirus in New York and numerous other employees are being monitored after having come in contact with people who are infected.
