On the far South Side of Chicago in the Fernwood nighborhood a firefighter was mowing his lawn and chatting with friends when an assailant opened fire on him.
Around 6:45 pm on Thursday evening an assailant ran past the firefighter’s home and fired 13 times. The firefighter was hit in the ankle, buttocks and right leg. The firefighter who has a valid concealed and carry permit returned fire in self defense, but he did not hit anyone.
The firefighter was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center where he was stabilized. Family and friends gathered at his bedside
Police from the 22nd District responded to the incident. They were able to locate the 25 year old suspect and bring him into custody. They also found the firearm that was believed to have been used in the shooting.
The firefighter was not the intended target of the shooting.
