An armed passing motorist was credited with saving the life of an Arizona state trooper by shooting and killing a gunman who ambushed the trooper in the middle
of a lonely interstate highway before dawn on Thursday January 12th 2017.

The trooper — a 27-year veteran who hasn't been identified but was reported as stable with gunshot wounds in his chest and right shoulder — was responding to reports that shots had been fired at about 4 a.m. (6 a.m. ET) on Interstate 10 about 40 miles west of Phoenix, Milstead said.

On the way, the trooper spotted a rollover accident, stopped to investigate and began blocking off the scene. A woman who was believed to have been ejected from the vehicle was later determined to have died at the scene, authorities said.

Described as an ambush-style attack, the trooper was attempting to block lanes of the highway when a man came up and shot him in the chest. A fight between the two then began on the ground.

A driver saw what was happening and tried to come to the aid of the trooper, who was asking for help. The suspect ignored the man’s commands to stop the attack, at which time the man went to his vehicle to retrieve his firearm.

"As the trooper exited his vehicle and began to lay out flares, it appears at this point that he was ambushed by the suspect," Milstead said. "In the initial confrontation, the suspect shoots the trooper in the shoulder [and] right chest area at least one time, possibly twice, disabling the use of the trooper's right hand and right arm."

The gunman then attacked the trooper with his hands, bashing his head into the pavement, Milstead said. That's when the passing motorist stopped.

"The trooper says, 'Please help me,' and asks the uninvolved third party for help," Milstead said. "That person retreats back to his vehicle, removes his own weapon from the vehicle, confronts the suspect, giving him orders to stop assaulting the officer. The suspect refuses. The uninvolved third party fires, striking and killing the suspect."

The hero driver was identified only as a man who was traveling to California with his wife.

A second motorist who also stopped at the scene ran to the trooper's vehicle, grabbed its radio and called for help.

"I would just say at this point, thank you, because I don't know that my trooper would be alive today without his assistance," Col. Frank Milstead, director of the Arizona Department of Public Safety, said after he met with the seriously injured trooper at the hospital.

Not only did this armed citizen have the right mindset to stop the suspect, but he also kept a straight head after the shooting in order to utilize the trooper’s radio to make a direct call for help.

It’s an incredible story of bravery and the successful use of a firearm by an armed citizen to save a life.

The people who shoot police men and women are criminals. We the people that carry guns know right from wrong. We know who to help.

by Bk Tracker on February 17, 2020

Good story with good outcome, this happened 3 years ago. With the troopers life at stake, no commands should have been given, especially under circumstances. Suspect should have been shot as soon as the passerby exited his vehicle. The extra few seconds with him shouting at suspect to stop could have been the difference between life and death for the trooper. I hope after 3 years that both the Trooper, and the good samaritan are fully recovered, both physically, and mentally.

Well, I think more policemen are killed with guns in civilian hands than saved.

I thank God for this hero citizen, and I also believe in citizens arming themselves. Bloomberg said he would see to taking ours away, where would that trooper be without that citizens gun? We have to stop this in Nov please get out and vote!

by David Williams on February 16, 2020

It only makes sense that every law abiding citizen be armed. That is the only way to out number the bad people out there. We can all save one another if we just arm ourselves. I am armed 24/7 and absolutely would have been honored to be able to save the life of this officer who risk his life everyday to save others.

by Willard Matechuk on February 16, 2020

Do that in Canada and you will be charged.

Thanks to that motorist for saving that Trooper’s life. Thank God for our Second Amendment.

I congratulate the hero armed citizen for saving the troopers life. I carry and would do the same if I encountered a life threatening situation involving law enforcement or another citizen.

by RonH on February 15, 2020

Good job, one less criminal moron and we save thousands to not have to jail him. All law abiding citizens should be armed, then the criminals and crazy people wouldn’t be so brazen.

by Phil on February 15, 2020

For those that might be wondering why this was re-listed since a 2017 incident. Look up the anti-second amendment (gun confiscation bill): SB 1625 currently submitted by Democrats. They’re trying to make Arizona a battleground state like Virginia. We wouldn’t be able to defend our homes, much less police officers if this bill passes into law.

Don Cummings, Bernie Sanders is a bonafide Communist and will take your 2nd amendment rights and trash them if he gets to be president. He doesn’t give a rats ass, about the Constitution,The other democrat politicians, don’t either, who are running against him as they have stated in their debates, he/they would rather have us living in a socialist state, controlled by a totalitarian government following the Communist Manifesto. You need to get your facts straight!

by Don Cummings on February 13, 2020

Chucklynch The news is about a citizen saving lives by acting appropriately with his firearm. Thanks to them. Perhaps you need to recognize that & also get your facts straight on Bernie Sanders, who has been a stalwart advocate for responsible gun ownership for decades. Stick with facts.

This happened in 2017? Is there an update on the condition of the officer?

by Thomas Giovannetti on February 13, 2020

A few years back there was a seminar given by our Sheriffs department relating to concealed carry and the laws, at the end of the presentation which was great. Our Sheriff made presentation stating that coming to the aid of Any law enforcement officer in need would be greatly appreciated. I would not hesitate even if it meant putting myself in danger.

by Ivo Rapetta on February 13, 2020

I have to congratulate this gentleman who, instead of hiding and doing his own things, felt obliged to help the policeman. Nowadays it is easier to be a coward than a man. In Italy this would not have happened, because there would have been some progressive judge who would have indicted the motorist for murder because he would have harmed the delinquent’s fundamental rights and would have sentenced him to compensate the thief’s family, as many, too many times it has happened! So honor that man and the second amendment of your constitution …

by Mike Burns on February 13, 2020

I just noticed the date is 2017. It is the same incident and there was extensive news coverage at the time.

Having been on both ends of this scenario it hits real close to home. This is the absolute right decision the 3rd party person made. But he will live with the consequences forever. To take any life, even a scumbags is a choice not many people will ever have to make, thank GOD! But as one who has made it, it is always on your conscience, and you always have guilt. Making the right choice is the only way to go, just be prepared to live with it. Prayers to both the trooper and his savior.

by Gene R. Redecker Sr. on February 11, 2020

Another example of why people should be armed (if they are comfortable doing so). Our society has reverted to such gross crimes of violence that any reasonable person who cares to, is a United States Citizen of “legal age” in their state of residence, not under indictment for, or sentence for a violent crime, not professionally diagnosed with any mental or physical deficiency which would prevent proper and reasonable use of any commonly available firearm of their choice! The Second Amendment to the Constitution makes this RIGHT available to all citizens who are desirous of and able to use a firearm! Any state or subdivision forbidding or otherwise regulating such ownership and use must be brought into compliance with the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States as this is a RIGHT conferred and guaranteed by that document!

by Don pratt on January 27, 2020

I would have done the same thing to help the officer and i beleive most people would except they are afraid they will get into trouble if they do, if that had been another moterist instead of a trooper that man helped they would have held him who knows how long while they investigated it, there is still alot of good people out there who wanna do whats right but theres just as many that want to take our rights away to be able to carry a gun. Im proud of the man who valued human life more then self concern of what would happen to him.

by BRENDA NECAISE on January 27, 2020

Why was this trooper out without a partner? In this day where people are out to hurt/kill our law enforcement people, they should NEVER go out alone. I thank the men and women out there trying to keep the peace. But for God sake don’t do alone!!

by Rod M on January 27, 2020

It’s criminal to carry between states only if you don’t follow the established law. Reciprocity also allows carry between states without criminal action.

by Grace on January 20, 2020

I am glad that the man knew what to do and had his gun to take care of business, otherwise the officer would be dead.

by daf62757 on January 20, 2020

The third party was traveling to California with his wife. How interesting that if he had gone into California with that gun, he would have been committing a crime. We need a national gun reciprocity law to ensure law abiding gun owners can travel across this country without fear of being locked up by a state that is denying them their 2nd amendment constitutional right.

by Deb on January 20, 2020

Thank you for Saving This Troopers Life.God bless you.Prayers for all involved.🙏🙏🙏🙏

by David Thompson on January 20, 2020

Interstate travel with a weapon is not automatically a criminal offense—not even by default. It is dependent on numerous factors: a) transport between which states (in this case AZ/CA, but which direction?); b) how the weapon is being transported—loaded or unloaded, disassembled even; c) whether in the trunk or readily accessible, d) current licenses held by the transporter; e) whether the transporter is a felon or not; f) the type of the weapon. Some of these factors have specific state laws governing them. A gun owner is expected to know and abide by the laws in any state he travels to/from. Most of the factors I’ve just mentioned are not described in the article.

by William Peschke on January 20, 2020

by John on January 20, 2020

Constitutional Carry state. No permit is required to carry a concealed firearm if a person is 21 years of age or over. To open carry a person must be at least 18 years old. Arizona still maintains a “Shall Issue” policy for reciprocity purposes.

Can you have a loaded gun in your car in arizona?
In a vehicle, any adult person who is not a prohibited possessor may openly carry a loaded firearm in a vehicle whether in a holster, case, compartment, or in plain view.

So @ Zach… Do you suppose 2 years matter to the officers family???

by Doug on January 18, 2020

“Not only did this armed citizen have the right mindset to stop the suspect, but he also kept a straight head after the shooting in order to utilize the trooper’s radio to make a direct call for help.”

Funny they say that when just two paragraphs earlier they said:

“A second motorist who also stopped at the scene ran to the trooper’s vehicle, grabbed its radio and called for help.”

by Zach on January 17, 2020

@K… That’s probably why they said “Thursday January 12th 2017” in the first paragraph of the article.

by Adolph Lozano on January 17, 2020

Every one knows that interstate travel with a weapon is a criminal offense, as every state has different laws.

by Chris Wilson on January 17, 2020

This is why its imperative to have a gun for your protection and to protect others. Criminals dont care one bit about laws. Laws only affect law abiding Americans. These politicians pushing gun control are not Americans, they are traitors to this country and need to be removed.

by Ron Russell on January 17, 2020

Great act of heroism. I just feel bad for that person when they arrive to the planet of California and if caught with that weapon they will hang him on the cross for it.

by Bill Kniegge on January 17, 2020

An incredible story… with a excellent ending… especially that the suspect was shot dead. I’m quite sure we won’t read about this in the NY Times… There should be a purple heart for citizens that take action at the risk of their own life. As long as the dems want an open border, this will sadly continue.

by Karen Marshall on January 16, 2020

Good Job by the passing motorist . The suspect needed killing as he obviously had no problem trying to kill a policeman. I hope this story inspires more responsible people to carry a weapon & not be afraid to use it to save their own life or someone else’s.
