This is what happens when good people are armed. As a motorist was passing through a desolate interstate highway in Arizona on January 12th 2017 he helped save the life of an Arizona state trooper. The armed motorist shot and killed a gunman that ambushed the state trooper.
A 27 y.o. veteran state trooper that has not been identified was reported as stable with gunshot wounds to his right chest and right shoulder. The trooper was responding to a report of gun shots fired at approximately 4 a.m. on Interstate 10 roughly 40 miles west of Phoenix. En route the trooper spotted a roll over accident which he stopped to investigate and began blocking off the scene. It appears that a women was ejected from her vehicle and died at the scene of the accident.
The attack was described as an ambush. While the trooper was blocking off the scene of the accident a man came up and shot him in the chest. The two then began to fight on the ground
A passing motorist saw what was happening and came to assist the trooper who was pleading for help. At that time when the suspect ignored the man’s commands to stop, he went to his vehicle to obtain his firearm.
Milstead stated, ” As the trooper exited his vehicle and began to lay out flares, it appears at this point that he was ambushed by the suspect. In the initial confrontation, the suspect shoots the trooper in the shoulder [and] right chest area at least one time, possibly twice, disabling the use of the trooper’s right hand and right arm.”
At that point the gunman then attacked the trooper bashing his head into the pavement with his hands. That’s the point when the motorist stopped to help the trooper
“The trooper says, ‘Please help me,’ and asks the uninvolved third party for help,” Milstead said. “That person retreats back to his vehicle, removes his own weapon from the vehicle, confronts the suspect, giving him orders to stop assaulting the officer. The suspect refuses. The uninvolved third party fires, striking and killing the suspect.”
The hero driver who assisted the trooper, helping to save his life is only identified as a man traveling to California with his wife.
Eventually a second motorist arrived at the scene, ran to the trooper’s vehicle and called in for help
“I would just say at this point, thank you, because I don’t know that my trooper would be alive today without his assistance,” Col. Frank Milstead, director of the Arizona Department of Public Safety, said after he met with the seriously injured trooper at the hospital.
Not only did this armed citizen have the right mindset to stop the suspect, but he also kept a straight head after the shooting in order to utilize the trooper’s radio to make a direct call for help.
This is an incredible story not only about bravery but how firearms in the hands of good people can help save a life
