The Moncure area of Chatham County is known to be a close knit community where violence is something out of the ordinary. However on Sunday law enforcement discovered 7 people dead in what appeared to be a murder-suicide.
Police responded around 5:30 pm on Sunday afternoon to a call reporting shots fired. When police arrived to the property which had multiple homes they discovered seven people dead.
The evidence indicates that Larry Don Ray shot and killed six family members before he turned the gun on himself, taking his own life.
“To lose any family member is devastating, but to lose several at once to unexpected violence is unimaginable. There are no words to describe the sense of loss we feel as a community in the wake of this terrible event.”
– Sheriff Mike Roberson
Authorities are still looking into a possible motive for the shooting.
