As the Coronavirus attacks New York City, which has over 15,000 confirmed cases already, it’s becoming obvious how hard first responders will be hit.

NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said Tuesday that the department has 211 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Approximately 177 are sworn and 34 are civilian members.

The scariest part of this is that over 3,200 officers called in sick, which is almost 8% of the workforce.

As the city braces for a medical emergency with a lack of ventilators and medical care, those working the front lines of the pandemic are being infected at an alarming rate.

As far as timelines on how this will play out, Mayor de Blasio said “April will be unquestionably worse than March, and right now my fear is that May could be worse than April.”

As far as preparation, in a statement on Monday the department said it has “distributed over 204,000 pairs of gloves, 75,000 N95 masks, 340,000 surgical masks and distributed 125,000 alcohol wipes and hand sanitizer to employees.”

Stay safe heroes.
