1st Inmate At Rikers Island Tests Positive For Coronavirus
The first inmate at Rikers Island tested positive for the coronavirus on Wednesday just hours after a corrections officer also tested positive.
Overnight the United States saw a 40% increase in coronavirus cases and despite all the efforts to keep it out of jails and prisons the first inmate at Rikers Island is now confirmed to have the deadly disease.
The president of the Correction Officers Benevolent Association, Elias Husamudeen, urged the board of corrections to start implementing their contingency plans.
“This crisis will grow worse with each passing day. Give us the help we need now!”

Husamudeen also asked the board to provide corrections officers with face masks that offer better protection than the ones they are already using.
The union is also saying that new inmates should not be brought to Rikers Island because they could potentially bring the disease into the facility.
